A glass handle lock is an all-in-one handle and lock that you bolt directly through a drilled hole in a glass door. It's the go-to solution for making a sleek, frameless glass door functional and private.

Key Characteristics & How It Works

Integrated Design: The handle and the lock are one piece. The lock cylinder is typically housed inside the handle itself.

Mounting Method: It is not installed on the edge of the door. Instead, it is mounted directly onto the surface of the glass using special fittings.

Through-Glass Bolts: The most common and secure method. Holes are drilled through the glass. The handle assembly is placed on both sides, and long bolts pass through the holes to clamp the handle securely in place.

Adhesive Mounts (Less Common): For lighter-duty applications, some models use high-strength adhesive pads, avoiding the need to drill the glass.

Locking Mechanism: The cylinder operates a latch or bolt that is part of the handle assembly. When you turn the key, this latch engages with a separate strike plate mounted on the adjacent wall or door jamb.

Common Types and Functions

Keyed Entry Function: The most common type. The outside requires a key to unlock; the inside has a thumb-turn or button to exit.

Privacy/Bathroom Function: Has a simple push-button or twist mechanism on the inside to lock the door, often with an emergency release (a small hole on the outside to unlock with a tool).

Dummy/Passage Handle: Looks like a locking handle but has no actual locking mechanism, used where a handle is needed but locking is not required.

Important Considerations
Glass Type & Thickness: The glass must be tempered safety glass to be drilled. The thickness must be compatible with the lock's mounting bolts.

Professional Installation Required: Drilling tempered glass requires precision to avoid shattering it. Installation is almost always done by a glazier or specialized installer.

Security Level: While functional, the security is generally considered light to medium duty. The weakest point is often the glass itself, not the lock.
