MODEL 103-20

a metal cam lock is a simple, reliable, and space-saving mechanical lock that uses a rotating metal cam to latch and unlatch doors and drawers. It's the workhorse lock for countless everyday enclosures where high-security isn't the primary requirement.

Core Components & How It Works:

Cylinder ("The Lock"): This is the main body that houses the keyway (or tumbler mechanism). It's usually a small, round metal cylinder. When the correct key is inserted and turned, it rotates a small, flat metal piece inside called the cam.

The Cam: This is the key operational part (hence the name "cam lock"). The cam is a flat, often offset or oblong-shaped piece of metal that rotates 90-180 degrees with the key. Think of it as a small lever or latch.

Striker Plate / Latch Receiver: This is a separate metal piece with a slot or opening. It's installed on the fixed frame opposite the lock.

Key Characteristics & Uses:
• Space-Efficient: Their small, cylindrical design makes them perfect for applications where a bulky lock won't fit, like file cabinets, toolboxes, mailboxes, locker doors, or server rack cabinets.
• Mounting: They are typically installed by inserting them through a pre-drilled hole in the door/drawer face. A threaded body screws into a retaining nut on the inside, holding it securely in place.
• Materials: True to the name, they are almost always made of metal (zinc alloy, steel, brass) for durability. However, lower-quality versions may have plastic components internally.
• Keying Options: They can be keyed alike (one key opens multiple locks), keyed differently (each lock has a unique key), or even master keyed (a single master key opens all locks, while individual keys open only their assigned lock).
• Variations: Instead of a standard flat cam, they can have other actuators like a flat tab, a nut driver (for securing knobs), or even a "claw" that reaches out to grab a frame.

Common Applications:
• Office & Home Furniture: File cabinets, desk drawers, credenzas.
• Storage & Logistics: Toolboxes, instrument cases, shipping containers, vending machines.
• Commercial & Industrial: Server racks, network cabinets, control panels, access panels on machinery.
• Retail & Public Use: Mailboxes, lockers, display cases, coin-operated machines.

Security Level:
• Low to Medium Security: Standard metal cam locks provide a basic level of security against casual theft, tampering, or unauthorized access. They are deterrents and keep things "honest."
• Not High-Security: They are generally vulnerable to picking, drilling, and forced entry with tools. For high-value items, they are often supplemented with additional locks or replaced with more robust locking systems.
Types of Keys for Cam Locks:

• Flat Key (Simple Bit Key): The most common, with notches along one edge. Lower security.
• Tubular Key (Round Key): A cylindrical key with indentations on the circular end. Offers slightly higher security than flat keys and is common in vending machines and coin-op devices.
• Barrel Key: An older, less common style.
