Common Applications
• Home: Medicine cabinets, gun cabinets, liquor cabinets, jewelry boxes, desks, and childproofing.
• Office: File cabinets, supply cabinets, locker desks, and storage closets.
• Commercial/Industrial: Tool cribs, maintenance cabinets, retail display cases, and machinery panels.

4

Key Considerations When Choosing One
• Security Level Needed: Is it for childproofing, deterring casual theft, or protecting high-value items?
• Type of Furniture: File cabinets, kitchen cabinets, tool chests, and display cases all have different common lock types.
• Material & Build Quality: Locks made from hardened steel are more secure than those made from soft metals or plastic.
• Keying Options: Do you want a unique key, keyed-alike (one key for multiple locks), or master-keyed (a system with different levels of access)?
• Aesthetics: Should the lock be hidden or is an external lock acceptable?

5

Advantages:
• Simple & Reliable: Few moving parts, hard to break mechanically.
Inexpensive: Cheap to manufacture and install.
Versatile: Can be fitted to various door thicknesses and materials.

Common Types of Drawer Door Locks

Here are the most popular styles, categorized by their installation and use:

1. Internal Locks (Built-in)

These are often the most secure and are installed inside the drawer or door.

Cam Locks (Keyed Locks): The most classic type. You insert a key to turn a metal arm (the "cam") that rotates to block the drawer from sliding open. Common on file cabinets, tool chests, and office furniture.

Plunger Locks: A key turns to push a spring-loaded metal pin (the "plunger") into a hole in the cabinet frame, locking it in place. Often used on sliding doors or adjacent drawers.

Electronic Locks: Keypad, RFID card, or biometric (fingerprint) locks. Found in high-security filing cabinets, gun safes, and modern furniture.

2. External Locks (Add-on)

These are attached to the outside of the furniture and are great for retrofitting.

Slide Bolts or Barrel Bolts: A simple manual bolt that slides into a strike plate. Very common but not key-secured.

Hasps and Padlocks: A metal hasp is mounted to the drawer/door and the frame. A padlock is then looped through to secure it. Provides strong security but is very visible.

Combination Locks: Dial or digital combination locks that mount externally, often used for lockers or storage trunks.

3. Child Safety & Prevention Locks

These are designed to stop accidental or curious opening, not necessarily for high security.

Magnetic Locks: A magnetic key is used to release a hidden magnetic catch. Keeps the furniture looking clean.

Spring-Loaded Latches: The drawer/door latches automatically when closed. To open, you must press a button or apply specific pressure.

Adhesive Locks: Use strong adhesive strips for temporary, no-tools installation. Popular for securing kitchen cabinets and drawers from toddlers.
